Quick summary: Krolia is an operative with the Blade of Marmora. As such she is often embedded within the Galra Empire as a spy. On one such assignment, she was part of a scouting team that was looking for the Voltron Lions. Her team picked up the signature of a Lion on Earth. At this point, Krolia fought and killed the other scout on her team to prevent reporting the location of the Lion to Zarkon. In the battle, her ship was damaged and she crashed to Earth.
She was rescued by a human man who took her in and helped her track down the location of the Blue Lion. Somewhere along the way, Krolia fell in love with her rescuer. She decided to stay on Earth and protect the Blue Lion rather than try to return to her mission or to the Blades. Shortly thereafter, they had a child, a son they named Keith. When Keith was still an infant, another Galra scouting party landed on Earth in search of the Lion. Krolia and Keith's father managed to take them out before they could report back to Zarkon about the Lion, but Keith's dad was injured in the attack. It is at this point that Krolia decides that she needs to return to space and to the Blades as the only way she can keep her lover and her son safe, by fighting the Galra Empire from the inside and trying to keep their attention far from Earth.
Personality:
On the surface, Krolia is calm and rational, as so many of the members of the Blade of Marmora are. This is more than a shared characteristic, it's a necessary piece of survival. Krolia is often sent undercover in long-term assignments, infiltrating and working against the Empire from within it. She has to be wary and cognizant of not betraying her true feelings or intentions. This mask of professionalism, seems to be something of a default later in her life, perhaps even a defense mechanism that comes into play at times that don't involve preventing discovery by the Empire.
There are moments when this mask slides though, none more obvious than when she is with Keith's father and later (past her canon point, but still a significant window into who she is as a character) with her son. Something in Krolia softens, and there's a gentleness in her, despite the sharp-edged warrior that she has honed herself to be. She chooses to stay on Earth in order to protect it, and to stay with the man that she met and fell in love with. Her affection and care for their child is evident too, in the few scenes that we are shown, Krolia is almost always holding Keith and taking care of him. Her love for her family is her strongest motivator, supplanting even the lifelong mission she's had to that point of fighting the Galra Empire.
It is this love that prompts her to make the sacrifice of giving up her family and leaving Earth. Though later Keith guesses that she made this choice because her mission was the most important, Krolia corrects him that the true reason she made this choice was to protect the person she loved the most, her son. Despite the fact that this is a choice she made, the regret in Krolia over having to leave her lover and child behind is obvious. Years later when she finally meets Keith again, she's willing to risk everything to save him, promising that even though she left him once, she'll never leave him again. It's clear that over all the years since she leaves Earth, she has carried the memory and love for her family with her. That love and the regret and pain of leaving behind the people she cares about most define who she is as a person -- willing to make sacrifices for what is important, and valuing the lives of those she cares about even more than her mission. This is significant because it is in many ways the antithesis of the Blade of Marmora's philosophy of the mission coming before everything.
Krolia is also an efficient, stubborn woman. She refuses to give up and refuses to compromise the things she believes in and is fighting for. Her principles are important to her, even when she's trying to take down the other scout she was partnered with, she takes the time to make the point that she is not in this for glory.
On the surface she can seem a bit intimidating and overly focused, but again these are defense mechanisms that she has had to develop because of the nature of her work as a Blade. She is, however, quick to step in and assist and help those she can -- from being ready to take on guarding the Blue Lion on her own (insisting that informing the Galaxy Garrison would only bring more danger) to years past her canon point stepping in to help repair the Castle ship however she can. She sometimes comes across as a bit uncompromising and impatient, but that is likely due to how focused she is on the things that are important to her.
As a Blade, Krolia is used to being on her own. There is an isolation about her, especially after she makes the choice to leave Earth. That solitude tends to make her fairly stoic, though her emotions run very strong and very deep. There are flashes of her anger and desperation in certain moments, such as when she's told (incorrectly, thankfully) that one of the Galra scouts had taken out Keith's father. Even in that moment though, Krolia refuses to give up, refuses to relinquish her weapon, a stubborn persistence that she still displays upon her reunion with Keith when she forces Trug into a deal.
Krolia is quick on her feet and intelligent, able to make plans and contingency plans in rapidly changing circumstances -- from the moment she has to take out her scouting partner, to assembling a plan to defeat the second scouting party, to her plan to turn the super weapon on Trug and escape with Keith in order to save both their lives.
Abilities:
Krolia is Galra. Therefore she is stronger and larger than many human beings. She is also a highly trained operative with the Blade of Marmora. She is skilled with both bladed weapons and blasters, as well as experienced in hand to hand combat. Krolia is often undercover, so her infiltrating and apparently acting abilities are also top-notch. She is also a capable pilot.
Alignment: Elios - Hate and Love.
All Krolia's decisions in her life have been based on these two emotions. Her lover for her family and herhatred towards the Galra Empire and the things that it has done are the driving forces behind some of her most significant and defining actions. Love is the reason she stays on Earth to begin with, and love is the reason she leaves and gives up her family, despite how much she wants to stay with them.
